That's black smoke coming down, maybe it was seeding or something.
I saw this movie once where the human race had to escape Earth and they ended up on another Planet and in order to survive on that Planet they had to adapt to their environment.
So they started to planting things, so they could live there.
I think that's what they are doing here.
- It's called terraforming.

To make it inhabitable, changing the biological systems.
