Betty washed clothes for neighbors without asking permission of the Jacksons.

In 1804, Jackson placed ads in Northern newspapers for the return of one of his runaway slaves.

Jackson offered $50 and an extra $1 0 for each 1 00 lashes, up to 300 lashes, which was pretty much a death sentence.

And on his own plantation, Jackson's slaves were treated just as harshly.
