She didn’t fight at all when he remounted, and she showed no sign of wanting to buck anymore. Call kept her in a trot for a mile or two before letting her go back to the lope. He didn’t expect her to try it again. She was too intelligent to waste her energies at a time when she knew he would be set for trouble. Call had taken the precaution of buying a lead steer from the Pumphreys—a big, docile longhorn they called Old Dog.
