- “Well, he’s a fighter, the Captain,” he said mildly. “He’ll box ’em if they get him riled.” “Box?” Ben Rainey said. “He didn’t box. - “She won’t hardly even look at me,” Dish said. He said it mildly, but he didn’t feel it mildly. Lorena’s indifference pained him more than anything he had ever experienced.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Gone to pick a tree to hang you from, son,” Augustus said mildly. He turned to Dan Suggs, who looked at him with his teeth bared in a snarl. “I don’t know what makes you think we’d tote you all the way to a jail,” Gus said.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Hell, gravediggers could make a fortune in these parts,” Augustus said. “Pea, you ought to buy you a bigger spade and go in business.” “No, I’ll pass, Gus,” Pea Eye said mildly. “I’d rather dig wells.” Call was thinking of Jake—that a man who had ridden with them so long could let such a thing happen. Of course he was outnumbered, but it was no excuse. He could have fought or run, once he saw the caliber of his companions.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- Zwey came back well before sundown with a wild turkey he had managed to shoot. But Luke wasn’t back. Elmira decided she might as well tell Zwey. She couldn’t tolerate any more of Luke. Zwey was mildly puzzled that Luke wasn’t there.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Jake must have got his nerves stretched,” Pea Eye said mildly.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “There’s more than a million species of insect and only one species of human being,” the man said. “When we finish up with this planet the insects will take over. You may not think it, seeing all this fair land, but the days of the human race are numbered. The insects are waiting their turn.” July decided the man was mildly touched, but probably no danger to himself or anyone. “I’d watch these crossings, if I were you. Cross where the deer cross and you’ll be all right,” he said.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Jake, you are surly tonight,” Augustus said mildly. “I guess leaving the easy pickings around here has put you out of sorts.” Pea Eye was carefully whetting his bowie knife on the sole of one boot. Though they were still perfectly safe, as far as he knew, Pea had already begun to have bad dreams about the big Indian whose ferocity had haunted his sleep for years.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “You don’t need to stand there looking out of sorts,” he said. “I won’t run off without you.” “I ain’t out of sorts,” Lorena said. “You are. You don’t want to stay and you don’t want to go.” Jake looked at her mildly. “I’ve been up that way,” he said. “It’s rough. Why don’t we go up to San Antonio and gamble for a spell?” “Tinkersley took me there,” Lorena said. “I don’t want to go back.” “You’re a hard one to please,” Jake said, getting a little testy suddenly.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- Of course Jake had not given her any direct notice that he intended to do differently. He moved in with her immediately and was just as pleasant about everything as he had been the first day. He had not taken a cent of money from her, and they seldom passed an hour together without him complimenting her in some way—usually on her voice, or her looks, or the fine texture of her hair, or some delicacy of manner. He had a way of appearing always mildly surprised by her graces, and if anything his sentiments only grew warmer as they got to know one another better. He repeated several times his dismay at her having been stuck for so long in a dismal hole like Lonesome Dove.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “No, the girl’s as generous as a preacher’s widow,” Jake said. “She wouldn’t take money from a gentleman like me. I hope she charged you plenty, though, for I know you’ve been there before me.” “I’ve always tried to keep a step ahead of you, Jake,” Augustus said. “But to answer your question, Call’s gone to round up a dern bunch of cowboys so we can head out for Montana with a dern bunch of cows and suffer for the rest of our lives.” “Well, dern,” Jake said. “I admit I was a fool to mention it.” He settled himself on the lower step and set the jug halfway between them so they could both reach it. He was mildly chagrined that Call had left before he could borrow the money—extracting money from Augustus had always been a long and wearisome business. Call was easier when it came to money—he didn’t like to lend it, but he would rather lend it than talk about it, whereas Augustus would rather talk than do anything.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- Jake’s comment had been mildly made, but it threw Lorena slightly off. She realized he was a finicky man—she could not get away with being lazy about herself, any longer. A man who noticed a frayed collar with a near-naked woman standing right in front of him was a new kind of man to Lorena—one who would soon notice other things, some perhaps more serious than a collar. She felt disheartened; some glow had seeped from the moment. Probably he had already been to San Francisco and seen finer women than her. Perhaps when it came time to leave he wouldn’t want to bother with someone so ill-dressed. Perhaps the surprise that had walked into her life would simply walk back out of it.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- Augustus too was mildly amused by the Irishmen’s ignorance. “Why, boys, you just have to flop over and drop,” he said.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “That’s because they’re God-fearing boys,” Augustus said. “You wouldn’t catch them boys with no Jezebel.” “Is that her name?” Chick asked. “It ain’t the name I heard.” “He’s never learned to curb his passions,” Wilbarger said. “I hope you’ll excuse him.” “A loose tongue is never welcome,” Augustus said mildly.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Why you’d best ask the Captain that, Dish,” he said mildly. “I can’t never remember.” “Well, since we got the afternoon off I believe I’ll take a stroll,” Dish said. He ambled off toward town.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “I’d say that passes belief,” Dish said. “Her whole head ain’t the size of your foot.” “If that chunk had come out of you, you’d have thought it was big enough, I guess,” Pea said mildly.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Deets’s pants are a sight, ain’t they,” he said mildly. “Seems to me he used to dress better.” Augustus chuckled. “He used to dress worse,” he said. “Why, he had that sheepskin coat for fifteen years. You couldn’t get in five feet of him without the lice jumping on you. It was because of that coat that we made him sleep in the barn. I ain’t finicky except when it comes to lice.” “What happened to it?” Jake asked.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- “Come see who’s coming,” the Captain said, rather mildly, Dish thought.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
- He himself had a linen tablecloth which he brought out once a year, on the anniversary of the death of his wife. His wife had been a bully and he didn’t miss her, but it was the only occasion sufficient to provide an excuse for the use of a tablecloth in Lonesome Dove. His wife, whose name had been Therese, had bullied horses, too, which is why his team had run off and flung themselves and the buggy into a gully, the buggy landing right on top of Therese. At the annual dinner in her honor Xavier proved that he was still a restaurateur of discipline by getting drunk without spilling a drop on the fine tablecloth. Augustus was the only one invited to the dinners, but he only came every three or four years, out of politeness; not only were the occasions mournful and silly—everyone in Lonesome Dove had been glad to see the last of Therese—they were mildly dangerous. Augustus was neither as disciplined a drinker as Xavier nor as particular about tablecloths, either, and he knew that if he spilled liquor on the precious linen the situation would end badly. He would not likely have to shoot Xavier, but it might be necessary to whack him on the head, and Augustus hated to hit such a small head with such a large pistol.>> Lonesome Dove 孤鸽镇
